Furniture Care Guide

With a little love and care using the right techniques and products, your furniture will look beautiful for a lifetime.

General - all finishes

When placing wood furniture in your home, avoid contact or proximity with any heat source, e.g. a radiator, wood burning stove, etc - these will dry and shrink the wood. Similarly, avoid placing your furniture in a damp or humid environment - moisture may damage the finish and cause the wood to swell.

Avoid placing hot objects (e.g. plates or hot drinks) directly on the surface - use coasters and placemats to avoid rings. If you’re using a tablecloth use a table protector underneath. Otherwise you may damage the finish.

Clean up spills immediately. Rather than wiping, use a blotting action to remove the worst of the spill before finishing with a clean soft damp cloth (damp, never wet).

For everyday cleaning, wipe the surface down with a clean soft damp cloth.

Don’t scrub the surface or use any abrasive cleaning products, as these will damage the finish.

Wax finishes

To keep the finish as its best, a clear bees wax should be applied every 3 - 6 months (monthly for a dining table top) with a clean soft cloth, working in the direction of the grain. The wax soaks into the wood itself, keeping it hydrated. Ensure the wax you use is clear to avoid changing the colour of the wood over time.

Do not use oil-based cleaners / polishes or aggressive cleaning products (e.g. kitchen surface cleaners, floor cleaners, etc) as these will damage the finish.

Lacquer finishes

To keep the finish at its best, simply wipe the surface down with a clean soft damp cloth (damp, never wet).

If using furniture polish you should ensure that it’s marked ‘non silicone’ or ‘silicone free’, otherwise silicones may seep into the finish and create a hazy film referred to as blooming.

Do not use aggressive cleaning products (e.g. kitchen surface cleaners, floor cleaners, etc) as these will damage the finish.

Sanding sealer finishes

Sanding sealer is an extremely light lacquer finish, similar to shellac. It features on only one of our ranges (Malmo). For added durability and to maintain the beauty of the wood, we recommend that you add a clear lacquer or wax to table tops before first use. You can then maintain your table in accordance with the guidance for your chosen finish above.
